Q.1.1 Ribble (2011) identifies nine elements that make up digital citizenship, encompassing the issue of the use, abuse and misuse of technology. Briefly discuss these nine elements.
1.Digital Access: Cyber users must know that not everyone has a chance or can afford technology that is common today. Digital Citizenship is about giving equal digital rights whether a person from a low income or a high income household. Exclusion is not wanted because it is believed that citizens will not improve or grow. Some cyber users have limited access which the equipment and resources need to be given to them. In order cyber users need to improve with digital citizenship they need to be committed.
2.Digital Commerce: It is selling products through electronic technology. Market economy is mostly done through electronic devices whether its a computer or a cellphone. Legal exchanges does happen but the users need to be careful with the disadvantages that comes with it. The common items that the cyber users usually purchases is toys, cars, clothing and food. Cyber users need to learn and know about the digital economy.
3.Digital Communication: A person's ability to communicate with other people is one of the digital revolution since it has expanded into variety of devices and messaging such as cellphones, computers, whatsapp and emails. Because there is constant communications, there are more options of where to communicate nowadays. Some cyber users unfortunately have not been taught properly of how to use varies kinds of communication options.
4. Digital literacy: It is about a process of learning and teaching about the technology and how to use it. Technology has made its way to schools and in the workplaces but in the workplaces the technologies are far more advanced such as videoconferencing while the schools most of the time have a computer lab with projectors. This requires a person with high qualified skills which means that the more technology evolves the more the learners must learn and catching up by studying to get a degree especially when technology evolves in 21st century.
5.Digital Etiquette: It is about dealing with inappropriate behavior which some cyber users do not care about learning and knowing about digital etiquette which it is all about appropriate behavior. With digital etiquette there are rules and regulations that are created so that the cyber users with good intentions can be comfortable without no harm. Every digital citizens must be responsible in the new society we are living in.
6.Digital law: In digital law, ethics is concentrated more. Ethical use by the cyber users goes with the laws of the society. Stealing an identity from online, hacking, sending spam and ransom is a crime which is unethical. Rules must be known so that no cyber user can take an advantage and do crime.
7.Digital rights and responsibilities: Digital citizens have rights to feel comfortable online without being harmed from unethical cyber users. Digital citizens can also have freedom of speech and their own privacy without being exposed. Digital rights must be explained and be understood by the cyber users. The cyber users must explain others that don't understand technology so that they can be all operate well so that productivity can increase in technology world.
8.Digital health and wellness: It is about health which includes they eye safety and also focuses on physical issues which addiction to the internet is one of them. Cyber users need to be aware that technology can be dangerous towards their health.
9.Digital Security: Some of our citizens do illegal stuff such as stealing an identity through online but the digital security which is the virus protection and backups.
